*PHOTOGRAPHS NEEDED: The Program Committee for the Fifth Annual I*EARN
Conference is planning the design of a poster for distribution in
Chattanooga in July. If you have photographs of I*EARN teachers and
students that could be used on the poster, please send them by May 15 to

EARTH DAY 1998
YOUTH CAN 1998 CONFERENCE: April 23rd, 1998. Theme: biodiversity. More
than 1000 students are expected to attend YouthCaN'98 in New York City at
the The American Museum of natural History. Through the use of
telecommunications, students from Australia, Kazakhstan, Argentina,
Russia, Belarus, China, and Lithuania will be able to participate.

KIDCAST FOR PEACE: Solutions For A Better World. This Earthday, April 22,
1998 for 24 hours, we invite you to help connect "kids" around the world

I*EARN TECHNICAL SUPPORT: A new conference, iearn.tec, is available for
all I*EARN participants. The purpose of this conference is to have a forum
where we can share our concerns, ask questions and help others to solve
technical difficulties. The facilitator of this bi-lingual (Spanish and
English) conference is Reinaldo Rivera in Puerto Rico.

BRICK Award For Community Leadership (USA only): The BRICK Award honors
ten outstanding leaders under the age of 30 (as of 5/1/98) who use their
talents to take action that measurably strengthens their local

BIKEABOUT IS STILL ON THE ROAD: After 6 1/2 months, just about 6,000 km
covered by bike, meetings with a few thousand students, more than 100
"dispatches" written about past history and present culture in 17
countries, 25 live chats with students and teachers from around the world,
the bikers are in Croatia and on their way to Sarajevo. They have another
2 1/2 months to go and should be able to finish on schedule in Gibraltar

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 1998 ASAP: Atlas of Student Action for the
Planet.The United Nations CyberSchoolBus will put together an on-line
global atlas of student action on the environment and they invite you to
send a 100-150 word description of your class or group contribution to the
protection, restoration and enhancement of the environment. Submissions
will be made available on-line as part of the UN's observance of World
Environment Day, 5 June 1998. E-MAIL the completed form with all your

* The Teddy Bear Project: They are looking for more classes who would like
to participate in
Spanish. There are some already waiting for partners!
* The Globalization Era: This is a contest in which each participating
school studies certain
problems of its community, from a global vision, using telecommunications.
* Literary Workshop: All who love literature are invited to join this
project which has
different topics.
LOCAL HISTORY PROJECT: Students from year 3 to 8 are invited to
participate in a local history project, involving research into the local
history of buildings, people and events in your town or surrounding areas.

December 1st 1998.
ENVIRONMENTAL MYSTERY: A story will be told in three parts over 6 weeks
starting 27 April 98. In the story clues are progressively revealed about

NTERNATIONAL OLYMPIAD OF PHILOSOPHY: Will take place from April 23-26 in
Brasov, Romania. The olympiad has the aim of stimulating the interest of

MIT JUNIOR SUMMIT - Children between ages 10-16 from around the world are
invited to enter a contest to participate in the 1998 Junior Summit at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US during the fall of
1998. Approximately 1,000 participants will be selected to participate in
an online forum based on how well they can document -- in their native
language, through a video or photographic essay, a musical piece, or
drawing or painting -- the state of children in their community, with
particular focus on how the digital revolution is affecting them. See
