I*EARN News Flashes!
LEARNING CIRCLES: are about to begin. 6-8 school teams join in the virtual
space of an 
electronic classroom to form a circle.  This circle works on projects
drawn from the 
curriculum of each of the classrooms organized around a selected theme. At 
the end of the 15-week term the circle collects and publishes its work. 
Learning Circles promote theme-based project work integrated with the 
classroom curriculum.  Working with Learning Circle partners from around 
the world help students develop important interpersonal skills. For

SCENARIOS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: An online course 
in which students will be taught established methodologies for thinking 
logically about the future, such as trend analysis, leading 
indicator identification, expert interviewing, and scenario 
writing.  Student work will be submitted to the National 
Summit for Sustainable Development in Detroit, Michigan, USA, 
May, 1999.  Approximate dates: February-April, 1999.  See this

YOUTH CAN '99: THE INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND COMMUNICATIONS 
CONFERENCE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE will be held APRIL 22-24 at the American 
Museum of Natural History in New York City. We welcome participation

DAY OF EMPOWERMENT: Andy Danoe from Surinam writes: "On Sunday 31 January
1999, we will be organising an 'I*EARN 
Motivatie-dag' (I*EARN Empowerment Day) for the students of our school. On
this day we will try to motivate teachers and the 24 
member-students ranging from age 11-19 to work on existing projects,
and/or talk

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL: The editors of The Contemporary invite 
you to respond to this topic and others for the May 1999 edition of 
this current events magazine. Please send your responses to iearn.tc. 
ST. VALENTINE'S DAY: Join students in different countries sharing 
stories and poems about love, respect and affection. Describe St.
Valentine's (or a similar festival) celebration at 
school and in the local community. Art, including computer art, is
welcome. 
Deadline for the first stage is February 12. 

FIGHT AGAINST CHILD LABOUR: This project is ready to begin its work for 
1999.  Writings, drawings, cartoons etc. are invited from current and new 
participants; a booklet of the collected writings etc. will be published
for 
distribution to participants, governments and international agencies. 
Work starts now - to be completed by late April or mid May.

VISITORS PROJECT: The aim of this project, facilitated by teachers in
Uganda, is to learn about how we welcome and take care of visitors 
in our different countries. It is hoped that at the end of this project,
students will have learnt about the 
different ways in which different societies welcome visitors  and thus
widen their scope of understanding of other societies. See this topic on

MATH CONTEST: The students of the University of Tartu (Estonia) invite you
to take part 
in an internet math contest which begins on the 25th of January. The
languages of the contest will be Estonian, English 
and Russian You can read the rules or send a math problem to the site of

WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS: This project aims at highlighting the problems
affecting the effective training of females in the discipline 
of Mathematics in the world today and proposing solutions to these

RURAL-URBAN MIGRATION: This is an opportunity for  students to identify
the causes and effects 
of  Rural-Urban Migration and suggest possible solutions to reduce this
phenomenon. Three secondary schools in 
Uganda  would like to find  three schools  outside of Uganda to
collaborate with on this 
project from February 15,1999 through June 30,1999. See this topic on

STREET CHILDREN: Students in Bulgaria would like students from all 
over the world to share their view this pressing problem. They hope  to
make governments realize that it 
is high time these children are helped and encourage them to cooperate and
share experience with
