ICT IN THE NETHERLANDS. Peter Baak, who helped launch I*EARN
in the Netherlands in 1990, has begun work as a Project Manager
for ICT Policy, (now an official part of the Ministry of
Education) to stimulate collaboration for the whole of the
Netherlands. Congratulations, Peter! All of us in I*EARN
globally look forward to working with you to "internationalise"

OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATION, SLOVAKIA ORGANIZES CONFERENCE. A
national Internet conference was held in Bratislava, July
1st-2nd. Several programs were presented, including one on
I*EARN by Joko Vrabel. Students from Srobarka presented
I*EARN Environmental Camp Tatry '98. Thanks to Katarina
Pisutova katarina@osf.sk who organized this great
conference.
US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS. A system of
Expert Panels has been established to evaluate educational
programs and recommend those programs that should be recognized
nationally as exemplary. The Panel is inviting applications by

ATTENTION TEACHERS IN RUSSIA AND CHINA AND EASTERN EUROPE.
"Cycling Siberia" is a project of two Australian students to
bicycle from London to Beijing with the purpose to "Inspire the
youth of Australia and Russia, and to create a greater
understanding between the two countries." They would like to

THE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT PROJECT. Students will understand the
ecological impacts of their lifestyles and their society's
habits, and will learn about ways that various societies, and
they themselves, may be able to reduce these impacts. Contact

LOCAL HISTORY PROJECT. All schools are invited to particpate in
this project which will continue until November 8th. Students
aged 9 to 17 research the history of their town or area and

SAVE SOUTH ASIA---SAVE THE WORLD, An appeal to all members of
I*EARN. Mohammad Ali Khwaja, from Islamabad, Pakistan writes
"1) The fire of hatred for each other in the hearts of Indians
and Pakistani is so great that they considering killing each
other as a religious and national duty. 2) The social evils of
child labor, illiteracy and poverty are threatening to human

order to improve the relations between the youth of the two

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROJECT. Students in Ghana have started a
project on substances commonly abused in their community and
are also looking at the recovery programmes available to
victims of substance abuse in their country.They are seeking
schools worldwide who are willing to participate in the
project by looking at the problems in their communities. See

"TEACHER SPONSORED THEME" LEARNING CIRCLES IN 1999-2000.
Students and teachers at an EXPO 2000 school in Germany are
planning 2 learning circles using the theme "MANKIND - NATURE -
TECHNOLOGY" 1) "Forests, lakes and river-their present
ecological condition"(Fall 1999) 2) "Stories, poems and
contemporary songs about forests, rivers and lakes" (Spring
2000) Publication will be in English and German, or possibly
more languages. Limit of 2 schools per country or region.
